Dream Catcher, 2023, Mixed media, 48 x 36 inches (2).jpg

Navigating surrealism and reality, dreams and memories, Water me intertwines personal narratives of evolution, womanhood, connection and spirituality. It gently ushers the viewer into the artist's world, while creating a safe haven for our own emotional travel. Table of contents, the first piece encountered by the viewer; serves as a prologue, setting the stage for the ephemeral journey that unfolds. It is also evidence of the thoughtfulness and care with which Fiyin Koko guides us through the sacred realm of her mind. She steadies us for the journey, holds our hand and never lets go.

In the majority of the painting & digital works, the fluid & entrancing brushstrokes, support the artist’s ethereal world building. The subjects hold the viewer's gaze, stimulating connection and shared emotion. The predominant blue hues, symbolizing serenity, contemplation and in parts depression & loneliness, are juxtaposed with vibrant yellows and oranges, representing resilience and the warmth of hope, creating a visual dialogue of emotions. A companion is almost always present; whether in the form of the blue woman or the yellow stool, a recurring motif that serves as a reminder that we do not journey alone. The fountain installation invites participation and symbolizes communal interaction. It keeps the viewers connected to the present whilst
engaging in a ritual of dreaming, wishing and creating.

The sculptural pieces, rich and otherworldly, pay homage to the molding traditions of Benin city. Fiyin Koko ventures beyond firing and uses brown coffee feldspar glaze to create contemporary vessels that beckon us, ready to hold us or pour into us depending on the viewer’s needs. The vessels also represent the growth in Fiyin’s practice inspired byherencounters with notable artist Peju Alatise, further emphasizing the importance of nurturing relationships and community. Water Me, provides a contemplative space to consider the ways in which we nurture ourselves and the influences we embrace in our lives.
